Tear-Away Book
Climb To

Photos from event by Vilma Dobilaitė

The cycle of textual and photographic stories Climb To, created between 2016–2023, was developed during creative workshops organized by Kaunas Photography Gallery and dedicated to producing the annual art publication, the magazine Į (“Into”). Each year, the magazine focused on a different theme related to Kaunas, and the Climb To cycle responded to these themes in its own way.

Climb To is a collection of diverse urban stories, gathered from archives (with particular attention to periodicals) and through small-scale expeditions that involved physically intruding, climbing, entering, and documenting both found objects and one of the cycle’s authors, who appears in the frame as a unit of measurement. The accompanying texts reflect on the expedition experiences, intertwined with newspaper excerpts from different eras—forgotten news, curiosities, and topical issues.

This edition presents six photographs from each part of the cycle, bound into a tear-away book. Each part corresponds to the height of one step (21 cm) of the famous Kaukas Stairs in Kaunas. This edition presents six photographs from each part of the cycle, bound into a tear-away book. Each part corresponds to the height of one step (21 cm) of the famous Kaukas Stairs in Kaunas. The complete book, measuring 126 cm in height, equals the combined height of six steps. The original Kaukas Stairs stand only a few hundred meters from George Maciunas’ birthplace (Donelaičio g. 1) and the Fluxus Room in the Kaunas Picture Gallery (Donelaičio g. 16).

Though not intended as a reflection on George Maciunas’ work, the expeditions often crossed his places of origin, and the cycle itself bears traces of his influence. In homage to the democratic principles of Fluxus, visitors are encouraged to tear off a sheet from the top of the book and, piece by piece, step by step, carry the work out of the gallery—into the streets, kitchens, pockets, or even trash bins.
